Ford F-450 Oil Change Guide
Oil Types, Capacities & Service Intervals for the F-450

Ford F-450 Oil Change Specifications
The Ford F-450 is built for maximum payload capacity, heavy equipment hauling, and commercial chassis applications, and is available exclusively in dual rear wheel (DRW) configuration. The F-450 delivers the highest payload capacity in the Super Duty pickup lineup with its standard DRW configuration. With towing capacity of up to 40,000 lbs and payload capacity of up to 12,750 lbs, maintaining a strict oil change schedule is essential to engine longevity under heavy loads.
| Engine | Oil Type | Capacity | Filter | Interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.8L V8 Gas | SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic | 7.0 quarts | Motorcraft FL-820S | 7,500 - 10,000 miles |
| 6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel | SAE 15W-40 (CK-4 Diesel-Rated) or 10W-30 Synthetic | 13.0 quarts | Motorcraft FD-4625 | 7,500 - 10,000 miles |
Engine-Specific Oil Details
6.8L V8 Gas
Oil Type: SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic
Capacity: 7.0 quarts
Recommended Interval: 7,500 - 10,000 miles
The gas V8 option for the F-450. Higher oil capacity than the F-150 V8. Full synthetic recommended for protection under heavy towing loads. Shares the same 5W-30 spec as most Ford EcoBoost engines.
6.7L Power Stroke V8 Turbo Diesel
Oil Type: SAE 15W-40 (CK-4 Diesel-Rated) or 10W-30 Synthetic
Capacity: 13.0 quarts
Recommended Interval: 7,500 - 10,000 miles
The Power Stroke uses diesel-specific oil rated CK-4 or CJ-4 — do not use gasoline-engine oil. The 13-quart capacity means higher oil change costs but proper maintenance is essential for injector and turbo longevity. Motorcraft 10W-30 synthetic is the premium option for extreme conditions.

Oil Change Tips for Your F-450
- The 6.7L Power Stroke takes 13 quarts of diesel-specific oil — using gasoline-engine oil (API SN) instead of diesel-rated (CK-4) can damage the emissions system
- The gas 6.8L V8 uses 5W-30 synthetic at 7 quarts — significantly different from the diesel's requirements
- F-450 trucks used for daily towing or commercial work should change oil every 5,000-7,500 miles regardless of the oil-life monitor
- Fuel filter changes are just as important as oil changes on the Power Stroke — Ford recommends every 15,000-20,000 miles
- Severe-duty applications (construction, farming, commercial hauling) may require intervals as short as 5,000 miles
